British Apple Pie Recipe
This classic British apple pie is the perfect dessert for a cozy winter evening. The sweet, spiced filling is
encased in a flaky pastry crust, making it a true comfort food. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
or a dollop of whipped cream.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup ice water
- 6 large apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers
until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together in a ball. Divide the dough in half,
wrap each half in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out one half of the dough on a lightly floured surface to fit the bottom
of a 9-inch pie dish. Transfer the dough to the pie dish and press it into the corners.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Arrange the
apple mixture in the pie dish on top of the dough.
- Roll out the second half of the dough and place it on top of the apple mixture. Press the edges of the top and
bottom crusts together and trim off any excess dough. Cut a few slits in the top of the pie to allow steam to
escape.
- Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg. Bake the pie for 50-60 minutes, until the crust is golden brown
and the filling is bubbly. Allow the pie to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
